Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
