Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
