Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
