Master Craps – Tips and Schemes: The History of Craps

Be cunning, play clever, and learn how to play craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
