Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A great many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
