Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
