Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
