Be brilliant, play brilliant, and master craps the proper way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
