Be clever, play cunning, and learn how to play craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and found refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
