Master Craps – Hints and Plans: The History of Craps

Be clever, play brilliant, and master craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
