Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
