Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
