Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
