Be a Master of Craps – Pointers and Strategies: The History of Craps

Be smart, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
