Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
