Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
