Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
