Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
