Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
