Learn to Play Craps – Pointers and Tactics: The Past of Craps

Be clever, play clever, and become versed in craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
