Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
