Become Versed in Craps – Tips and Tactics: The Past of Craps

Be smart, play clever, and pickup craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
