Master Craps – Tricks and Strategies: The Background of Craps

Be cunning, play smart, and master craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
