Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
