Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
