Be clever, play smart, and discover how to play craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
