Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
