Master Craps – Hints and Strategies: The History of Craps

Be cunning, play smart, and become versed in craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
