Be clever, play cunning, and learn how to play craps the correct way!
Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
