Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
