Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
