Be a Master of Craps – Hints and Tactics: The Past of Craps

Be smart, play smart, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
