Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
