Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
