Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
