Be brilliant, play cunning, and become versed in craps the right way!
Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
