Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
