Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
