Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps.
