Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
