Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
