Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
