Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
