Be clever, play brilliant, and pickup craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
